Dear Blue Goose Farm CSA Members,

We hope you had a pleasant weekend. We had a busy one, and the week is starting off the same. We apologize for this late delivery of the newsletter. Unfortunately with fresh foods, timing is everything. Sometimes we do not know until the very last minute which items will actually make it in the box for the week. Weather, temperature, quality, and quantity all factor into the equation. We had some very last minute decisions to make. And the box is another nice one. Thank you for your patience.

Dear Blue Goose Farm CSA Members,

It is that time again, for all the kiddos to say, "Good-bye summer, hello homework." (With less enthusiasm, of course!) This week we offer our CSA moms some veggie snack ideas for those after-school munchies. And with the adjustment to hectic schedules, we offer two great tasting and oh-so-easy recipes for this Labor Day weekend.

We hope you were able to handle all those tomatoes last week. You will not see that volume again this year. We have a nice selection of veggies this week, including the return of celery. Perhaps this is a good opportunity to make and freeze some Celery Pesto (recipe provided in the email from Week 8).

Dear Blue Goose Farm CSA Members,

There is nothing like the bright deliciousness of a summer tomato. We have all waited many weeks to finally get them in such quantity. If you weren't able to try one of last week's recipes, you have a second chance with this week's load of tomatoes. The Roasted Tomatoes recipe is fabulous (just like sun dried, and yes, you can use any size tomato). If you don't feel like turning on the oven, then just  enjoy a great meal this week of summer ease…corn on the cob, boiled new potatoes, steamed green beans or zucchini, and fresh sliced tomatoes…

Dear Blue Goose Farm CSA Members,

Another great box this week full of summer's finest produce. It's what we wait for all year...kind of like Steelers' fans anticipating football season to start!

Our CSA member, Victoria Cope, was quoted in the Altoona Mirror saying, " Once [Scott] started growing tomatoes and we started eating his tomatoes, I cannot bring myself to buy one in (stores). I just can’t do it.”  This week, our "Food For Thought" section supports why consumers feel this way. And we offer a delicious tomato recipe to try.

Here is an additional recipe for Red Cabbage Salad - different and delicious. ENJOY!

Dear Blue Goose Farm CSA Members,

The dog days of summer are here, so to blow the boredom away, we offer you a few farming lessons in this week's news. If you have children, give them a lesson as well, helping you in the kitchen making Megan's Summer Salad or our Farm Fresh Frittata. Have fun!

Dear Blue Goose Farm CSA Members,

We are now in mid-season, our half-way point. You will notice that your boxes truly look seasonal this week - full of bright colors and the delicious splendor of summer. We hope you enjoy it eating it as much as looking at it.

Dear Blue Goose Farm CSA Members,

With some experimentation over the weekend as to how to use celery in ways other than as veggie sticks for dip, ants on a log, stuffing, or Waldorf Salad, we found one delicious alternative way to not waste those fabulous leafy celery greens - PESTO! After our discoveries with garlic scape pesto and kale pesto, we think pesto may be the new way to use loads of any kind of leafy greens to avoid juicing them (yea, green juice is not for everyone!).

We apologize for any confusion you may have experienced while trying last week's recipe for Steamed Beets with Sautéed Greens. Here's the correct version of the recipe - Steamed Beets.

As you'll discover after reading the newsletter, here is the link to Vale Wood Farm's "Farm to Fork" - invitation. We hope you'll join us for this delicious venture.

Dear Blue Goose Farm CSA Members,

The boxes are really green this week but with lots of variety. Your only source of color comes from the red beets! We offer a delicious recipe for Steamed Beets with Sautéed Greens, which you can increase by heeding this side note that couldn't fit into the newsletter...

NOTE: You can add a similar amount of chard leaves (ribs removed) as the listed beet leaves and double the remaining ingredients. However, serve the plate in reverse with the beets over the greens.

And our recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes can also be made with zucchini instead, just follow the same steps. For an added flavor, try these Tasty Veggie Dressings.

Dear Blue Goose Farm CSA Members,

We hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend because this farmer was busy working throughout his. The good news is we got all the hay baled and stored. Hooray! Things are in transition as some crops are ending and others are beginning. We have another fresh and full box for you this week. Enjoy!
